Friday, May 24:

5:30 pm– Processional / Opening Ceremony
   Special Guest Philip Brashear son of Carl Brashear 1st African American Diver

6:00-8:00 pm - Reggie Gist, Umoja Festival Reception
6:15-7:30 pm - Forte Jazz Band (Unity Stage)
7:30-9:00 pm - TFC Band (Unity Stage)
9:00-11:00 pm - Heatwave (Umoja Stage)

Attendants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets

Saturday, May 25:

Kids Corner

Noon - 5:30 p.m.
Featuring a full assortment of traditional kids activities including special appearances from Andalo, the Children's Museum of Virginia Mascot, arts and crafts, giant inflatables, relays, parachute play, coloring contests, connect 4 challenge, checkers, tug-of-war, kids horseshoes, youth fitness challenge, and much more. All activities will be supervised by Portsmouth Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Staff.

Chaka Khan performes Saturday May 25 at Umoja Festival

Chaka Khan will headline the annual UMOJA Festival on Saturday, May 25 at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Khan is called "The Queen of Soul-Funk." Throughout her career with Rufus and as a solo artist, Chaka Khan has released 22 albums and has earned 10 Grammy Awards (and 22 nominations), including Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female (album), 1992, for "The Woman I Am"; Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, 1990, for "I'll Be Good To You" (with Ray Charles); and "Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female (album), 1983, for "Chaka Khan."

Her music has not only met with critical acclaim, but fan support. She has racked up 10 #1 Billboard songs, seven RIAA certified gold singles and 10 RIAA certified gold and platinum albums, including "Ask Rufus," "I Feel for You" and "Masterjam."
